Heute habe ich eine brennende Frage an Euch: Was ist Eure (kreative) Arbeit wert?

Today I have a burning question for you. You are creative people: What´s the value of your work?

Ich habe ja noch nie einen Quilt verkauft. Wenn ich wollte, habe ich Quilts verschenkt, aus Gründen, die ich gleich ausführen werde. Denn jedes Mal, wenn ich Quilts auf etsy oder DaWanda sehe, wundere ich mich. Da werden nämlich allerhübscheste, alleraufwendigste Quilts zu Preisen angeboten, bei denen ich mich wirklich nur wundern kann! Erst kürzlich sah ich einen Quilt mit 1,80 x 1,40m und lauter modernen bunten Dresdenblocks für € 130,00!! Oder einen Babyquilt für € 40,00! Oder sogar $ 40,00, glaube ich! Das tut ja schon weh mitanzusehen.

I´ve never sold one of my quilts- just gifted them when I felt like it but I am asking because every time I see quilts for sale on etsy or DaWanda (the german handmade plattform) I´m staggered.There you can find the most beautiful and workintense quilts for prices so very much below value that you can only be astonished. Lately I saw a stunning modern dresden quilt in twin size, full of bright and happy dresden plates for € 130,--!!! Or a babyquilt for € 40! Or even less,  40 $! That hurts.

Wenn ich mal kurz nachrechnen dürfte: 

Baumwollstoffe kosten im allerbesten Fall € 7,50 - 10,00 /m, sogenannte echte Quiltstoffe kosten schon mal € 16,-- oder € 18,--. Wenn ich ein Layer Cake kaufe, soviel brauche ich schon für eine Quiltvorderseite dieser Größe -und da ist noch kein Rückseitenstoff und kein Hintergrundstoff dabei- dann kostet mich das mit Zoll und Zustellung schon € 40 - 50,--. Dann rechnen wir Hintergrundstoff für etwa € 7,-- dazu und noch 2 m Rückseitenstoff (bestenfalls € 14,--) und 2m Vlies (bestenfalls        € 25,--) dazu, dann bin ich schon beim Material bei mindestens € 96,-- Auch wenn man sich  selbst nur einen Mindestlohn von € 10,--/Stunde zugestehen wollte, müsste man den Quilt in unter drei Stunden fertig haben, inklusive Stoff bügeln, zuschneiden, nähen, dazwischen immer wieder bügeln, nähen, quilten und Umrandung. Was wäre ein fairer Preis für einen Quilt (Einzelbettgröße)?

Let me calculate that. (I´m sorry, I cannot estimate the needed amount of fabric in yards so I´ll calculate in metres, ok?) Good quality cottons usually cost € 7.50 - 10.00 /m, real quilt fabric costs     € 16 - € 18/m. If I order a layer cake that would be about € 40 - € 50 with delivery and taxes. I would still need background fabric for my pattern and a piece of bigger fabric (or more pieces of fabric) for the quilt´s back. So let´s see. When we count in background fabric, batting (cheapest € 25 for 2 metres of lightweight batting) and a fabric back (in the cheapest case € 14) then the material would be € 96 alone -at least! Even if you only allow yourself a minimum wage of € 10 per hour you would have to finish the quilt in under three hours to not loose money! Even if fabric could be much cheaper at your place (is it?)- would the work be priced fair when a twin size costs € 130? Or € 200? Or € 500? Or..?

Denn man hätte noch weder Steuern berücksichtigt, noch die anteiligen Kosten von Nähmaschine, Nadeln, Faden, Rollschneider, Schneidematte,Schneidelineale, allfällige Schablonen, möglicherweise Muster aus Büchern, Zeitschriften etc.

Because we haven´t calculated taxes, the thread and the proportional costs of roller blades, sewing machines, cutting mats, rulers, templates, maybe the costs of patterns yet. 

Manchmal schreibe ich zum Spaß mit, wie lange ich für einen Quilt gebraucht habe. Selbst bei Mindestlohntarif müsste ich für die meisten rund € 900,00 bis € 1.000,00 verlangen, um meine eigenen Kosten und den Aufwand zu decken. Und viele Quilts die auf diversen handmade-Plattformen zu Dumpingpreisen angeboten werden, sind auch noch viel viel aufwändiger als meine! Deshalb frage ich mich und Euch einfach, wie das geht? Warum machen Frauen das?

 

Sometimes I take notes when I´m quilting just for fun - to see how long something takes me to cut, sew, quilt. And I haven´t counted the time I spent designing the pattern, looking for fabric, buying fabric, choosing fabric... Even considered a minimum wage of € 10/h I would have to ask for € 900 -1,000 for a twin sized quilt just to barely cover my own costs and effort. So I am asking myself and you - how does that work? Why do women sell under value?

Wisst ihr was ich vermute? Die meisten Frauen werden sagen, es ist ihr Hobby und sie würden sowieso nähen, also finanzieren sie bloß ihre Materialien. Ich kann das nicht unterstützen. Warum sollte die Arbeit, die drinsteckt, denn nichts wert sein? Kommt mir nicht mit Angebot und Nachfrage und dass die Leute nicht bereit wären, mehr als € xy für einen Quilt zu bezahlen. Ja mag sein, aber WEIL es eben Quilts schon zu Dumpingpreisen angeboten gibt! Kein Mensch überlegt sich, wieviel Mühe, Zeit und Arbeit in so einem Projekt steckt. Die Quilterinnen ruinieren sich ihr eigenen Geschäft und verkaufen sich unter Wert, das ist es! Aber muss das sein? Was meint ihr?

Let me tell you my guess: most people women will say it´s their hobby and they would sew quilts anyways so they just want to cover the costs. I don´t agree. Why should the work not be considered valueable? Yes, I am familiar with the aspects of demand and supply. :) But I won´t take "but people are not willing to pay more than € xy for a quilt..." as an answer. Maybe that´s true but only because there ARE quilts for dumping prices available and quilters keep ruining their own markets. Does it have to be like that? What´s your opinion?

Was wäre für Euch ein angemessener Preis für einen Quilt, sagen wir, nicht bloß aus Quadraten, mit einem nicht zu kleinteiliges Muster?
What would be a fair price for a quilt with not just plain squares but with a -not too complicated but not too tiny- pattern? Let´s say a twin size? Baby quilt?

Du+ich Quilt-HOCKER [you+me quilt STOOL]

BEFORE

So here´s the thing: I had this stool (a flea market find) . I liked the shape but not the dated fabric. So I made my very first wonky mini quilt.

I had ironed all the little wonky blocks (2" squares) to lightweight fusible interfacing before sewing them together. That made meeting the corners of the squares easier and gave them nice stability for the next step...

 

...when I took out my staple gun and reupholstered the stool.

I closed the corners with some invisible stitches after.

 

I think it looks so nice together with the mid century chair that I stained dark and reupholstered a while ago.

This was a project of many firsts for me: first wonky pattern, first time use of grey fabrics (I know! Where have I been!? But grey fabrics are kind of hard to find here ) and first use of a quilt-as-upholstery-fabric.
 

We´ll use the chair and the stool in the master bedroom. As an extra little reading nook and to drop off clothes.

Here I took it outside on the veranda to show the real colors a bit better.

The best thing- the combination of two of my passions- fleamarket finds and quilts. I love it when projects turn out like I hoped. :) 
Of course that´s not always the case. Remind me to show you the striped curtains I dyed lately. Definitely no success, they are soooo ugly. And our washing machine was turquoise for days...

Häferl und Flohmarktschätze [cups and more flea market treasures]

Für die hölzerne Bank um den Küchentisch brauchen wir Pölster. Passend zum realen Pünktchengeschirr entstanden am Wochende ein paar Blocks mit Kaffeehäferln. Die kostenlose und detaillierte (englische) Nähanleitung gibt´s übrigens bei bee in my bonnet.

We need some cushions for the bench at the kitchen table. I made some blocks with cups which will fit all the real cups with polka dots. The free and easy to follow tutorial was by bee in my bonnet.

 

Es fehlt noch mehr Hintergrundstoff und wie ich die Blocks letztendlich anordnen werde, muss ich noch überlegen.
I need more background fabric and am not sure yet how I will arrange them in the end.

Der heutige morgendliche Flohmarktbesuch mit M war auch wieder erfolgreich. Rosenporzellan für M und ein 50er Jahre Zeitschriftenständer aus Messing mit Teakgriff für mich. Der schröckliche Kunstlederteil muss allerdings weg und wird durch einen netteren Stoff ersetzt werden. Ich denke da an Zickzackmuster oder Streifen in weiß und irgendeiner Knallfarbe. Was meint ihr? Vielleicht zur Abwechslung petrol. :) Gekostet hat der Zeitschriftenständer 1 €.

This morning´s flea market hunt with M was successfull. M found her porcelain dishes with roses, I found a mid century magazine holder. The hideous brown faux leather will have to go though. I already tried. It can be removed easily. I´m thinking of a new fabric with chevrons or stripes, in white and some bright colors. Maybe I´ll use white and ...hm...teal for a change? :) What do you think?  I´m sooo into teal at the moment if you can´t tell from my latest projects. The magazine holder was 1 € by the way.

Diese kleine Messingschüssel um 50 Cent musste auch noch mit. Die Form hatte es mir angetan. Ich habe noch nicht entschieden, ob ich sie mit Lack farbig spraye oder einfach nur putze/poliere. Mittlerweile habe ich in mehreren Einrichtungszeitschriften und Designblogs gelesen, dass Kupfer "das neue Schwarz" sei. Pff. Ich mache mir gar nichts aus Kupfer (außer es ist voller Grünspan) und ebensowenig aus allen Lachs- und Pfirsichtönen. Wäh. Soweit es mich betrifft, könnte Messing einrichtungsmäßig also gerne das neue Kupfer werden. So als Miniakzent, bloß nicht zu viel.

This little brass dish (palm size) for 50cents  had to come home with me too. I just loved the quatrefoil/flower form. Don´t know if I´ll spray paint it or just clean/polish it. I´ve read in several magazines and design blogs lately that copper is the new black. Well. I don´t care for copper (as long as it is not full of green rust). Or any salmon or peachy color. And I never have. Sorry if those peachy pinks are your favourite colors- they are also my aunt´s favourites. As a kid I got far more cutesy peachy nightgowns with frills for Christmas from her than any tomboy could ask for. :) But what I wanted to say was: if copper is the new black - as far as I´m concerned brass should be the new copper in interior design. Just not too much of it. Maybe one or two pieces per room at most.

Im Juni möchte ich gerne...

- viel Zeit mit dem Mann des Hauses und der Familie verbringen
- Erdbeeren aus dem Hochbeet ernten (wenn die blöden Elstern nicht wieder schneller sind)

- Holunder pflücken, Hollerstrauben und Holundersirup machen
- den neuen Bock Fritzi nach Absitzen seiner Kastrationsquarantäne zu den Meerschweinmädels  setzen (erl.!)

- Ws Geburtstag feiern
- nicht mehr heizen müssen
- wieder regelmäßig nähen !!!
- Vorhänge färben
- Vorhänge und Lampen aufhängen
- mit M und A Flohmärkte besuchen -  ohne Regenschirm

- garteln und Zitronenmelissensirup machen
 

- viele Freunde einladen und ausprobieren, wieviele aufeinmal auf die Küchenbank passen (die dann hoff. da ist)
- noch mehr Bücher mit einmal-les-Qualität aussortieren und der öff. Bibliothek spenden
- Flanellpyjama und dicke Wollsocken endlich gegen zarte Sommernachthemden tauschen
- an Rosen schnuppern
- mit dem Rad zur Arbeit fahren
- ein ♥ Jubiläum feiern
- schwimmen gehen???

In June I´d like to....

- spent a lot of time with the man of the house and family
- pick strawberries from the raised bed (hopefully the stupid magpies won´t be faster again)
- pick elderblossoms and make elderblossomcakes and sirup
- let the new cavyboar Fritzi finally meet the cavy girls (after waiting for 5 weeks after he was neutered) -check!
- celebrate W´s birthday
- don´t use the heater anymore (at first the winter wouldn´t leave and now it´s still much too cold and wet for the season and we still need heating!)
- sew regulary!!!
- dye curtain fabric in aqua or teal
- hang lampshades and curtains
- visit fleamarkets with M and A -without umbrella please! 
-sew pillows for the kitchen bench
- have a lot of friends over and see how many can fit around the table on the new bench (which is hopefully here by then)
- sort out and donate more books that I won´t read again to the local library
- smell roses
- change flanelpyjamas and woolsocks for delicate summer nightdresses
- do more gardening and make lemon balm  (balm?) sirup
- ride my bike to work
-celebrate a ♥ anniversery
-go swimming???

 

du + ich Quilt [you + me quilt]

Von diesem Quilt blieben lauter kleine Stoffstreifen übrig. Ca. 3cm breit und max. 10 cm lang. Also ziemlich unnütz. Aber weil ein paar Lieblingsstoffe dabei waren, wollte ich sie nicht gleich wegwerfen. Vielleicht ließe sich doch  noch irgendetwas daraus machen?

I had all these little fabric strings from this quilt left. The strings were about 1.5" wide and about 4" long. Quite useless. The only reason I didn´t throw them away was that they were some of my favourite fabrics so far in between. Maybe I could find a use for them?

Zum allerersten Mal habe ich also etwas mit unregelmäßigem Quiltmuster ausprobiert. "Wonky" also unregelmäßige Muster liegen mir sonst so gar nicht.

For the very first time ever I tried an irregular quiltpattern. A totally wonky + quilt. Wonky is usually not my type of cake. Not. at. all.

Ich mag exakte Muster.... I prefer exact geometric patterns....

Gerade Nähte.... Straight seams....haha

...Stoffecken, die sich ganz genau treffen. ...Fabric corners that meet exactly. So those + + were way out of my comfort zone at first.

Als "neutralen Hintergrund" verwende ich immerimmerimmer leinenfarbige Stoffe. Oder Weiß. Kein Grau. Niemals.
My go to "neutral" fabric is alwaysalwaysalways linen colored or white. Not gray. Never.

Tja. Well.

Sieht so aus, als mag ich nun auch schräge Muster. :)  Looks like I like wonky now, too. And gray. :)

 

Dann verwendete ich diesen Miniquilt, um den 50er Jahre Schemel, den meine Mutter und ich im März am Flomarkt fanden, neu zu beziehen. Das Ergebnis zeige ich euch beim nächsten Mal.

Welch ein Luxus, sich Gedanken über Nebensächlichkeite wie Quilts machen zu dürfen. Wir haben gerade die Bilder in den Nachrichten gesehen und sind in Gedanken bei allen, die von den massiven Regenfällen und Überschwemmungen betroffen sind. Just saw the newest pictures in the news. Our hearts go out to everybody who is affected by massive rain and floods in Austria, Germany and Switzerland.

Mitbewohner [cohabitants]

 

Während der Blog ein Nickerchen machte, waren wir nicht untätig. Aber neben Renovieren, Siedeln und Arbeiten bleibt eben wenig Zeit, nicht einmal zum Nähen. Als wirklich erstes, da hatten wir gerade die Küche ausgesucht und noch kein einzige Kiste gepackt, hatten wir im März das Vogelhäuschen umgesiedelt. Aus Sorge, die Meisen würden mitten im Umzug zu brüten anfangen und wir müssten sie samt Haus zurücklassen. 

While the blog took a little nap we weren´t. But with work, renovations and moving there wasn´t time for much else. Not even sewing! The very first thing we moved was the birdhouse. Back in March when we hadn´t even made the final decision about the kitchen yet and had not even packed one single box. We were concerned that the tomtits would start to breed right in the middle of the move and that we had to leave them behind in that case.

Es hat funktioniert! Auch am neuen Wohnort wurde das Häuschen angenommen. Zumindest drei Jungtiere sind im Nest und werden Tag für Tag lauter. Einer der frischgeschlüpften Jungvögel fiel vorletztes Wochende aus dem Nest und landete zu seinem Glück auf dem kleinen Vorplatz vor der grünen "Tür" und nicht Meter weiter unten am Steinboden. Nachdem der Jungvogel zwar noch federlos war, aber sehr aktiv und laut piepste, habe ich Gummihandschuhe angezogen und den Piepser wieder zurück ins Nest gesetzt. Zu dem Zeitpunkt waren noch zwei rosa Jungvögel gleicher Größe und drei Eier im Nest.

It worked! Tomtits found this house also at our new place. As far as I can tell from the different voices (I don´t look in there now) there are at least three, maybe four young birds in the nest. They get louder every day. One little bird fell out of the house (wonder how?) two weeks ago. It was lucky because it landed on the little vestibule right under the green "door" and not on the ground (and because it was the weekend so we found it). It was still pink at that time, 3/4" long, but very active and not obvoíously ill. So I waited until the big birds left the nest, put on some rubber gloves on and put the babybird back. At that time there ware two pink babybirds in the nest and three more eggs.

 
Zur Zeit sind die Elternvögel schon so an unsere Anwesenheit gewöhnt-außerdem haben sie viel zu tun- dass es ihnen völlig egal ist, wenn wir direkt neben ihnen auf der Veranda Kaffee trinken oder Blumen gießen. :)
These days the parentbirds are so very busy. They don´t even care if we sit  right next to their house  on the veranda and drink coffee. :)

Seht ihr, was der Vogel im Schnabel hat? Eine Biene! Hoffentlich keine pestizidvergiftete...

Im Übrigen sind Meisen nette Mitbewohner, die ihren eigenen und den Babyvogelmist wegtragen. Seit fünf Jahren brüten nun schon Meisen in dem Vogelhaus. Wir hatten auch heuer keinen einzigen Klecks auf dem Verandaboden. Das Einzige was man tun muss, ist das Nest nach dem Brüten zu entfernen und das Haus auszuwaschen.

By the way...tomtits are easy cohabtitants. They don´t leave any trash. All the babybird´s poop is carried away. They didn´t leave one single splotch on the verandafloor. Nice.

Endlich! Die Sonne ist wieder zurück! Da waren heuer im Winter wirklich viele Wolken vor der Sonne, deshalb freut es uns umso mehr.

Finally! The sun is back! There were many clouds this winter, heavy fogs and lots of snow so we couldn´t be happier for some rays of spring sunshine.

Um die Sehnsucht nach Frühlingsgrün ein wenig zu lindern - die Bäume sind heuer nach dem harten Winter auch im Süden immer noch kahl- habe ich einen schnellen Polster mit grünem Stern genäht und alle hellen grünen Pölster wieder hervorgeholt.

We are also longing for some springgreen - after this unusal hard and long winter the trees are still bare.So I quickly made a springgreen starpillow and took out all the other charttreuse pillows.

Die Rückseite besteht aus einem alten Stoff, den meine Eltern in den 80ern als Schlafzimmervorhänge hatten, mit einem einfachem Hotelverschluss. Der Stoff erinnert mich an Sonntagmorgen, an denen ich Zelte aus Bettdecken baute. Wohl zur groooßen Freude, derjenigen, die noch länger schlafen wollten. ;-) Ein wenig Stoff ist davon noch übrig. Fein.

The backing has an envelope closure. It is a cotton fabric from the curtains that my parents had in their bedroom in the 80ies. It brings back early childhood memories of sunday mornings when some people tried to get some more sleep while someone built fortresses and tents with their duvets. ;-)  I´ve used this fabric before and there is still a little left. Sweet.

The sawtoothstar-in-a-chubbystar combines two of my alltime favourite blocks. It is a little pattern that I designed a while ago and had also used for my marigold fall pillows.   Lucy and Nat invented a fun challenge to make something with the theme of "geometric." Since the pattern is geometric I´m linking up to  Le Challenge #1 - GEOMETRICS.

Flohmarktschätze [flea market treasures]

Ich mixe bei unserer Einrichtung ja gerne Altes mit Neuem, "Geerbtes" mit I.kea und Flohmarktfunden. Manches bleibt, wie es ist und vieles wird weiß gestrichen. Jetzt habe ich schon lange nichts Brauchbares mehr am Flohmarkt gefunden. Dafür waren am vergangenen Samstag plötzlich lauter Schätze dabei. Komisch, wie das manchmal geht. Eeeeeewig suchte ich schon nach genau solchen mid century Stühlen für den Esstisch! Am Wochenende wurden meine Mutter und ich am Flohmarkt endlich fündig. Noch dazu zu einem absoluten Schnäppchenpreis von €12,50 pro Stuhl. Ha! Wenn man bedenkt, dass man für Neuauflagen dieses Designs durchaus € 160,-- bezahlen soll... Die Stuhlbeine sind mit stabilen Zapfenverbindungen befestigt und ich bin ganz verliebt. Der Mann des Hauses nennt sie "Omastühle" :)

For our furniture I like to mix old and new, a few design pieces with handmedowns, I.kea and certain fleamarket treasures. Some pieces stay like they are and the rest gets some (white) paint. Lately I haven´t found anything usefull on the flea markets for quite some time and that´s ok. But last saturday there were so many treasures! Funny how this works sometimes. I´ve been looking for mid century stools like that for ages. Last weekend mum and I have finally been successfull to find them at the fleamarket. They were in relatively good shape and a total bargain at €12,50 per piece. Imagine that the reinvented designs like these would cost about € 160 and more! The quality and craftmanship with mortise joints is so great and I´m completely in love. The man of the house calls them "dated grandmachairs" btw but he will love them when he sees them paired with a white table and white shelves :)

Natürlich braucht es noch ein wenig Arbeit. Sie müssen gründlich gereinigt werden und etwas aufgearbeitet. Vielleicht male ich sie auch weiß an oder in Pastellfarben?

Of course they´ll need some love and elbow grease. After cleaning I´ll need to work on them. Maybe I´ll spray paint them white or pastell? But at the moment I like them like they are.

Das war noch so ein entzückender mid century Fund. Hach. Ein ganz kleines Emailleschälchen, ca. 8cm lang, mit einer handgemalten, zart winkenden Dame für drei Euros. Auf der Rückseite steht "Handmade in Austria, Steinböck". Das ist vielleicht etwas für die losen Haargummis am Nachtkästchen.
This was another enchanting mid century piece and it was just 3 Euros. It´s a tiny little enamel bowl, maybe 3inches long, with a handpainted charming lady. On the back it says "Handmade in Austria, Steinböck". It could be sth  for the loose hair ties on my nightstand?

Apropos Handwerkskunst: dieser Korb wurde von einem alten Mann mit langem weißen Bart geflochten, der wunderschöne Körbe und hölzerne Löffel am Flohmarkt verkauft. Er erzählte, dass er dies nun in seiner Pension macht, einfach, weil es ihm Spaß macht und er nicht möchte, dass das Handwerk in Vergessenheit gerät. Für einen solchen Korb braucht er fünf Stunden! Ich stelle mir den Korb neben dem Sofa vor, voller aufgerollter Quilts.

Speaking of craftmanship: this beautiful basket was sold by an old man at the fleamarket who looked like Santa Claus with a long white beard. He told me that he makes baskets and wooden spoons now that he is retired because he doesn´t want this art to be forgotten. Stunning. It takes him 5 hours to make a basket like this. I imagine it next to the sofa with the current quilts nicely rolled up in it.

Und dann war da auch noch dieses 50er Jahre Schemelchen,... . :) Mit einem neuen petrolfarbenen Bezug würde es zu den selbst bezogenen Sesseln passen.
Then there was this 50ies footstool at the thrift store... :) It was marked down from € 40 (last visit a couple of weeks ago) to € 10 this time. Can you see it´s potential? Imagine it with a new -teal- cover or maybe an aqua damask pattern.
